Trying to be decent

I recently started thinking a bit more about the decisions I’m making in life. I guess it started a while back when the elections were coming up and I was intent on making my mind up about what I think is important and what should be done politically to create the kind of world I would like to live in. I ended up voting for a very far left party with a focus on humanitarian aid, refugee help and most importantly the environment. Meaning; I think those things are important.

Still, thinking about it I felt incredibly hypocritical. I love eating pre-packed food even though the packaging is insanely polluting. I also love bacon and, well, any meat really. I love drinking coffee to go and I love taking long showers. In short; I’m not very environmental friendly. Pretty much the only thing I’ve got going for me is that I travel either by bike or public transport, but since that is more because of the fact that I can’t afford to get my driver’s license than anything else I don’t really think it counts.

In conclusion, I think it’s time to start making some changes in my life and to begin implementing some of this stuff a bit more actively as opposed to just thinking about how one day I will become a good person. I have already stopped eating meat as much as my family meals allow me which is a start, I guess. There’s much more though, like making responsible choices when it comes to services such as hotels versus an Airbnb rental, or picking a bank that makes responsible choices or.. I can pretty much keep going forever with this.

Truthfully, I’m not going to do all of it. I’m not going to be perfect. I would, however, like to feel a bit better and even more so; aware, of the things that I buy, do and generally choose. All those little things add up and even if I’m not going to be completely waste-free or socially responsible I am going to make an effort to make small changes that will eventually add up to a big change. The time to start is now.
